Several states have adjusted "notification" requirements that go beyond the national WARN Act. New York just put a "90 Day" notification rule in place for organizations doing mass layoffs involving 50 or more full-time employees.
Comment: While the state law changes don't apply to the SHRM Body of Knowledge, these changes are important not only because of the implications for companies with operations in different states, but because of the broader implications of how these practices affect organization decisions, results -- and employee behavior. The consensus in the SHRM Certification classes has been that some of these changes lead to quicker departures of the best employees.
